MAP TESTING
Fifth-grade MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing will begin on Sept. 1 this year. Each week we will do one test; there are three in all. Please make sure that your child is well-rested and has had a good breakfast! The first test will be in language- it will take place in language class on September 1-3.
MAGAZINE SALES
Along with other grades in the school, fifth-graders participate in selling magazines during the month of September. The kickoff day is Sept. 16. Magazine sales monies are used for various projects around the school. For instance, much of the traditional Iowa history Des Moines trip is paid for through magazine sales. Many other worthwhile events are made possible by the magazine sales, too.
FIFTH-GRADE WEBSITE
Did you know that the fifth-grade team has created a website to make it easier to stay in touch? What will be on that website? Here is a short list:
Type this in your browser’s URL: http://dms5.weebly.com/
**After this week, the newsletter will not be printed, you will need to look at the website for updates and information. If you do not have access to internet at home and need a printed copy of the newsletter, please speak with your child’s homeroom teacher. **
FYI
The Social Studies textbook is online; however, the science and math books are not. The science text has an online glossary and activities section. Please ask your child’s teacher, if you have any questions about this.
Band/Orchestra
Please see the letter in the Friday Folder from Mrs. Larson and Miss Hahn about the tryout process for instruments. With this many students, the entire process will take several weeks. You will be kept up-to-date with the process, but should plan to attend an instrument night on Thursday, September 17th at DMS (more info coming).
Activities Reminder
Admission to Friday night football games will be $5.00 for both adults and students. If you have an activity pass this will get you into these games. Students must have their activity pass with them to get in, otherwise they will need to pay the $5.00.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mr. Peterson. Check out our 5-P classroom blog. (Go to the classroom website listed above and look to the right under Teacher Blogs.) I will post updates like the one I posted recently on the “marshmallow challenge” activity (with photos!). You can also access a new website that I created called A Poem Place. You and your child can read a carefully selected poem each week ALONG with some short, but very interesting, informational text. Leave a comment. Join the fun! All are welcome.
From Mrs. Nowack: What a great first week! Scholastic Book orders are coming home today in Friday Folders and ordering online is easy (however, if you wish to return the order to me, please make checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs). Please place orders by September 10th.
From Mrs. Halweg: Today we jumped right in to our first math unit with a review of place value. Our study over the next few weeks with a focus on comparing, writing, and reading decimals. We’ll also be practicing converting units of measurement within the same system.
From Mrs. Suhr: We have started a read-aloud in our class. I am reading Inkheart to the class; they are really enjoying it! We are also excited to settle into a “normal” schedule! Students have learned how to log in to their online social studies texts, and have directions to do this at home, if needed. Our first unit in social studies is about the geography of the U.S.
In homeroom, my language students are writing me a letter to tell me all about themselves!
