STEAM Day!
Our first annual STEAM Day on Wednesday was a success! Students participated in a variety of activities involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The Decorah Middle School owes a great big thank you to our community for sharing their expertise with us! The kids greatly enjoyed the day and participated in many educational activities.
Opportunity for Parents:
See attached link (Click Here) for information on a workshop available for parents: Steps for Growing Respectful and Responsible Kids.
Walk/Bike to School Day:
On Friday, October 7, Decorah Middle School will be participating in Walk/Bike to School Day. Each October schools and communities around the global participate in this one day event to promote healthy habits for students, reduce air pollution, and boost a sense of community. We would like students to meet at Phelps Park on Friday morning. If they normally ride the bus, that is where they will be dropped off on Friday. If your student is normally a drop off, parents are being asked to drop students off at the entrance to the park on Upper Broadway. We will all walk to the middle school together. If your student eats breakfast at school, they’ll be able to grab one before going to their Prime Time class.
Middle School Parents Still Make a Difference- September Issue
The Parent Institute (Education’s #1 Source for Parent Involvement Information) provides a free resource for parents of middle school aged students. The monthly publication provides articles relevant to issues middle schoolers (and their parents) face. Check it out out here.
Study Buddies:
All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! If your child is interested, ask for or have them get a form from their PrimeTime teacher and return the form to school. Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- This short week we continued to practice our skills adding and subtracting decimals. We also began our assessment preparation. Your student was given their study guide/topic review to complete today. We’ll be checking this on Monday. Our next math assessment will be on Tuesday, October 4 over these skills.
From Mr. Kelley:
Social Studies - We have been learning about Native American tribes that lived here before the Europeans came to this continent. We are discussing how and why the regions that they lived in differed.
Reading and Language: We are studying the theme or moral message that is in various short stories. Students are also completing their next reading response letter in which they will be examining the theme of one of their independent reading books. In language class we have been studying narrative writing and creating outlines for our own narrative stories.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Next week’s VIP: Mason
From Mr. Peterson:Science: We are creating models of food webs for next week to learn about the flow of energy and matter in ecosystems. Reading and Writing: We are learning about what makes a good story; in particular, we are exploring themes in literature and how to find and talk about them. Check out our classroom website: peterson210.edublogs.org
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - With our crazy mixed up week, I have decided to move our social studies test to Monday. Our next unit is about different Native American cultures.
Language - Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing. The students are brainstorming ideas for a “Memoir”. They also are learning about tricky verbs.
Star of the Week: Next week’s star is Caden B. (Oct. 3).
