5th Grade Newsletter
Important Dates:
****This time of year gets very hectic with a lot of activities and special events.
Please take note of the important dates that are updated each week & mark them on your calendars!****

PTO Spellathon
Envelopes will be sent home on Monday for students to collect the money they helped earn for their school. All pledge money should be collected and returned to school no later than April 16th.
Field Trip
See the field trip permission slip in your child’s Friday Folder. You need to fill out the bottom part of it and return it to school by April 13th.
Treats
Please remember if students bring treats to school for any reason they must be store-bought.
Due to allergies, no homemade treats are allowed. Thank you in advance!

Study Buddies: All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- This week in math we spent two days taking the math MAP test. Our remaining time was spent learning about the U.S. customary system units of measurement for length, capacity, and weight and how to convert each type. Next week we’ll focus on the metric system and the same three types of measurement.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: This week we took the reading MAP test and students met in various book clubs to discuss a novel they have been reading. Students are also analyzing various problem and solution informational texts in order to create our own problem and solution projects.
Social Studies: Students will be studying Iowa history, culture, and government during the next few weeks.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: Student engineers have been busy building and testing prototype toy cars this week; testing the use of balloon motors and testing the effect of different side nozzles on the balloon motors.
Reading: This week we’re begun work with comparing and contrasting within a text selection. Students should continue to read at least 20 minutes each night. The IR book project this quarter is due April 17th (a letter to a movie producer).
Language: Students analyzed the features of persuasive letters, we’ve spent time preparing for the spellathon test, and students wrote friendly letters to their 4th grade pals.

Science:We’ve been continuing our work with the particle nature of matter and physical properties of matter. We have been exploring the chemical properties of matter next week.
Reading and Writing: We are writing letters to 4th-graders and creating a digital portfolio to experiment with collecting and reflecting on student work samples.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We are spending a couple weeks learning about Iowa geography, history, and people. Students are enjoying the learning about our wonderful state!
Language - We are currently writing letters to 4th graders to let them know what the middle school is like. This has delayed us in starting our unit on persuasive writing. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
