DMS 5th Grade Newsletter
Important Dates:
February 13- conferences (see more information below)
February 14- conferences (see more information below)
February 17- no classes
February 20- no classes
What a Week! We’re glad to be back at school! For your information, as of right now, the last day of school for students will be Tuesday, May 30th. Should we miss any more days of school, that date will be pushed back.
Iowa Assessments for grades 5-8 will be held January 23-February 10. Next week students will participate in vocabulary and reading tests. Here is a slideshow of test-taking tips and strategies to help prepare for the tests.
Student Led Conferences
In the spring, DMS holds student-led conferences (as opposed to the traditional parent-teacher conferences). This format is a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning. There will be a brochure included with the report cards to provide more information about these conferences as well as conference sign-up sheet. Please watch for the pink conference sign up sheet (included with the report card) and return it no later than January 26th. After all of the conferences have been scheduled, we will send a letter home that confirms your scheduled conference time. If you have questions, contact your child’s homeroom teacher.
For your convenience, these dates have been added to the digital calendar on the 5th Grade Weebly website.
Geography Bee
Congratulations to Elizabeth Pritchard, Nat Roberts, Simon Kutz, and Ki Vine who advanced to the 2nd round of the DMS Geography Bee on January 20th. All students at DMS between grades 6-8 participated. It was optional for fifth-grade students. For more information about the Geography Bee you may go to http://www.nationalgeographic.org/bee.

Study Buddies:
All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
