Student Led Conferences
In the spring, DMS holds student-led conferences (as opposed to the traditional parent-teacher conferences). This format is a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning. There will be a brochure included with the report cards to provide more information about these conferences as well as conference sign-up sheet. Please watch for the pink conference sign up sheet (included with the report card) and return it no later than January 26th. After all of the conferences have been scheduled, we will send a letter home that confirms your scheduled conference time. If you have questions, contact your child’s homeroom teacher.
For your convenience, these dates have been added to the digital calendar on the 5th Grade Weebly website.

Study Buddies:
All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- This week in math we began our study of fractions. This first unit focuses on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We'll continue to practice and learn new skills next week.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: We completed an interactive read-aloud using the text “Shin’s Tricycle”, a story about father reflecting on his family and the bombing of Hiroshima. Students evaluated and gave evidence to support the theme of the story. In language, students revised their essay for the Old Creamery Theatre competition and began working on a new vocabulary list.
Social Studies: Students are learning about the choices African Americans faced in order to survive lives as slaves.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week students had the opportunity to practice solving problems in groups with respectful communication and kindness (ask them about their “Break Out” activity). Friday students worked with their groups to sort objects based on their properties.
Reading: We have started a mini-unit on sequencing.
Language: We have begun a unit on informational reports.
Next week’s VIP: Hazel
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We will have a quiz on heat transfer and the atmosphere on Tuesday of next week.
Reading and Writing: We are researching and writing an informational piece based on the superb website called Wonderopolis. In the process, we are practicing research skills, reading a lot of great informational text, and using what we learned while we studied text structures in reading class.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - In unit 8 students are learning about the dilemmas African Americans faced in order to survive lives as slaves.
Language - We have started discussing informational reports. Each student will write a short report about a state. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week next week (Jan. 9): Kaiden Q.
