5th Grade Newsletter
Important Dates:
****This time of year gets very hectic with a lot of activities and special events.
Please take note of the important dates that are updated each week & mark them on your calendars!****
March 21 Reading Games Competition
March 23 Faculty vs 8th grade b-ball game (more info below)
March 24 End of 3rd Quarter
March 28 begin spring MAP testing (see specific schedule below)
April 4 Old Creamery Theatre
April 13 STEM FEST at Luther (4-7 PM)
April 14 No School (Spring Break)
Faculty vs 8th grade Basketball Game
This is a fun fundraiser to support students going on the Washington, DC trip this summer. All students are welcome to attend the game (and cheer on their favorite teachers!!!)! The game will be Thursday, March 28th- after school until about 5. Admission is $2. Students may also pay $1 to participate in a half-time half-court contest. Additionally, the concession stand will be open during the game.

PTO Spellathon
It’s time again for the PTO Spellathon! Packets sent home with students on March 20th (next Monday)- please watch for these. We will split the test (100 words) into two weeks. All students will be required to test, regardless of their pledges. After the testing is completed, the packets will be sent home again- for students to collect the money they helped earn for their school. All pledge money should be collected and returned to school no later than April 16th.
Treats
Please remember if students bring treats to school for any reason they must be store-bought.
Due to allergies, no homemade treats are allowed. Thank you in advance!

Study Buddies: All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- Today in math your student took their Topic 9 test over dividing with fractions. They will be bringing these home to share with your early next week. Our next unit of study will focus on understanding the concept of volume and finding the volume of rectangular prisms.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: Students are studying poetry. We are analyzing poems and writing our own.
Social Studies: Students are learning about how the three branches of government in our Constitution function.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week we have been learning about balanced & unbalanced forces, net force, speed, and velocity.
Reading: We wrapped up our Folktale Unit and students shared their book talks videos!
Language: Students have been busy preparing and practicing stories to tell their classmates. We continue to improve our grammar and spelling skills through daily writing, DLR’s, and word work.
From Mr. Peterson:
Science:We’ve been continuing our work with the particle nature of matter and physical properties of matter.
Reading and Writing: We are reading fiction stories to help us explore the BIG question: Who is blind and who can see? We’ve finished our fiction book trailer reflection. You can watch book trailers on Kidblog now.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We will be reading an online text called the U.S. Constitution.
Language - This week , we have been spending some time doing a storytelling unit. The students will tell their stories March 21-22. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
