All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! If your child is interested, ask for or have them get a form from their PrimeTime teacher and return the form to school. Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- Today your student will be bringing home their topic 4 math assessment to share with you. They will need to return these to school on Monday after you’ve signed that you’ve had a chance to look at it and discuss it with them. We’ll begin our next unit of study, over dividing with whole numbers, next week.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: Students finished writing a sequence, how-to essay. Be sure to take a look at those in their Kidblog writing portfolio. We are also studying how to use context clues to identify new or unknown words. This reading and language unit is a study of informational text and the different purposes and text structures.
Social Studies: Students are studying the early explorers to the Americas from 1400-1600. There will be a test coming up on Tuesday over chapter 5.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week students have been learning about the sun, movements of the Earth, seasons, and time zones. Ask your child about the investigation we did with shadows. Students should continue to make daily moon observations; I’ll ask for these to be turned in next week.
Reading: We wrapped up our informational text unit and practiced fluency with reader’s theatre.
Language: Students have been very busy revising their memoirs; we even had some 7th graders come to our class to assist with some peer editing. This week’s lessons focused on semi colons and quotations/dialogue.
Next week’s VIP: Austin
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We are learning about patterns of the sun, moon, seasons, and weather. We’ve been learning about sun shadow patterns and what they can tell us about the motion of the Earth, time of day, and seasons.
Reading and Writing: We have been exploring informational text this week, particularly how to recognize main ideas and supporting details in text. We’ve finished up our Old Creamery Theater writing project and will move into a short research project on the foods of Thanksgiving, where they come from and how they are produced. We’ll post our research on the 5th-grade bulletin board when we are done.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We are now beginning unit 5 on 8 different New World explorers whose expeditions led to settlements in North America.
Language - Students should be about done typing their final copies of their Memoirs. This past week we’ve been working hard on good sentence structure. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week: Next week’s star is Alina J.
