Study Buddies:
All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! If your child is interested, ask for or have them get a form from their PrimeTime teacher and return the form to school. Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.

From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- In math this week your student was assessed on their knowledge/understanding of multiplying multi-digit whole numbers. Your student received this assessment back today and will be bringing it home to share with you tonight. Next week we’ll begin our unit of study on multiplying with decimals.

Reading and Language: In reading, we worked on understanding the structure of a narrative story. Students constructed their own plot diagrams of a story that we read in class. In language, students are writing a narrative story for the Old Creamery Theatre writing contest. See http://www.oldcreamery.com/education/writingcontest/ for more details.

Conferences: In 5th grade, we schedule parent-teacher conferences with the homeroom teachers in 15 minute increments. If you haven’t signed up for a time yet, please take a look at my schedule https://goo.gl/L86Uw8 to see what is available. Email me with your prefered date and time and I will add it to the schedule.
Science: We will wrap up the Living Systems Unit on Tuesday of next week with a final unit assessment. We have been reviewing this week. Students should continue to make daily moon observations.
Reading: This week we continued learning how to identify main idea and supporting details and students have been reading history-themed non-fiction books in guided reading groups.
Language: Students have been busy typing their memoirs this week. See above for information above regarding two exciting writing contest opportunities!

Science: We are finishing up with our ecosystem and organism unit. We’ll have a unit test next week. Next up? We’ll learn more about patterns of the sun, moon, seasons, and weather.
Reading and Writing: We finished our realistic fiction narratives. They have been fun to read! We have been reading text closely to understand story structure, characterization, and theme.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We finished up our unit on Native American culture regions. Next week, we will begin our unit on explorers to North America. This is such a fun unit. We will pretend to “dive” to retrieve artifacts from a sunken ship. We will use these artifacts to learn about the people that explored the “New World”.
Language - Students are typing drafts of their memoirs. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
