Important Dates:
Dec. 23 - Jan. 2 - Winter Break
Dec. 20- Chorus Concert- 7 PM @ HS auditorium
Annual DMS Food & Book Drive
Sponsored by the student council, during the month of December, we will run a food and book drive. Students may either bring in monetary donations (monetary donations go a lot further at the food bank than a donation of food items) or gently used children’s books. As an extra incentive, the prime time that brings in the most donations will get to choose a teacher to dress up in a Santa costume on the day before break. Contact Mr. Stock if you have questions about the food and book drive ([email protected]).

NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- In math this week we continued to practice dividing with 2-digit divisors. Your student learned traditional long division. On their upcoming math test (Dec. 7), they will choose which division strategy they would like to use to solve the problems (partial quotients or traditional long division).
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: This reading and language unit is a study of informational text and the different purposes and text structures. Currently, students are working on creating an informational article emulating the style and format of wonderopolis.org articles.
Social Studies: Students have been learning about the struggles faced in Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth settlements. Students created a real estate advertisement to persuade others to come to one of the settlements. We will be taking a quiz on Monday over this information in chapter 6.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week we took a trip to the Luther planetarium on Tuesday and we wrapped up our space systems unit.
Reading: Through the month of December, we will be reading Freedom Crossing, a historical fiction novel. This week’s lessons were on flashbacks, metaphors, cliffhangers, and characterization.
Language: The student’s speeches last week were great! This week, we started a mini-unit on writing paragraphs.
VIP (week of Dec. 5): Landon
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: This week we have been learning about the Earth’s atmosphere (one of the four basic “spheres” of the Earth.) and how it creates weather patterns. On Thursday next week, we’ll have a short quiz on this first unit on the atmosphere and weather forecasting. As usual, we have been reviewing our learning as we move forward.
Reading and Writing: We are working on reading and writing informational text, specifically how authors structure text using five common text structures like description, sequences, cause and effect, etc. We are writing along with our reading. This week we started a short written or video piece (student choice) that tells how to do something, or how something happens using the sequence text structure.
Special Note: If we get snow this winter (!), I’m letting students know that they can bring in an old rag-towel to put in the bottom of their lockers. That will help absorb water from their snowboots and keep things a bit cleaner.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - The next unit will be about early English settlements in North America. Students are learning about the struggles faced in Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth settlements.
Language - This week, we are working through a short unit on paragraph writing. Students will brainstorm ideas, develop a main idea, details, and a closing sentence. They will edit, revise, and proofread their work. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week: Next week’s star is Jenna L.
