5th Grade Newsletter
Important Dates:
****This time of year gets very hectic with a lot of activities and special events.
Please take note of the important dates that are updated each week & mark them on your calendars!****
April 13 STEM FEST at Luther (4-7 PM)
April 14 No School (Spring Break)
April 18 Science assembly
April 20 Viewing the 6th grade operetta, Legally Blonde Jr.
April 28 Forestville/Mystery Cave field trip
May 5 Norman Borlaug Inspire Day field trip (more info. to come)
PTO Spellathon
Envelopes were sent home on Monday for students to collect the money they helped earn for their school. All pledge money should be collected and returned to school no later than this Monday (April 17).
Treats
Please remember if students bring treats to school for any reason they must be store-bought.
Due to allergies, no homemade treats are allowed. Thank you in advance!

Study Buddies: All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- This week in math we continued to learn about and practice converting units of measurement. Our focus this week was on the metric system. Your student will be assessed over their understanding of unit conversions on Wednesday, April 19.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: This week we took the language MAP test and students met in various book clubs to discuss a novel they have been reading. Students are also analyzing various problem and solution informational texts in order to create our own problem and solution projects.
Social Studies: Students will be studying Iowa history, culture, and government during the next few weeks.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: Student engineers have been busy building and testing prototype toy cars this week; testing the use of balloon motors and testing the effect of different side nozzles on the balloon motors.
Reading: This week we’re begun work with comparing and contrasting within a text selection. Students should continue to read at least 20 minutes each night. The IR book project this quarter is due April 17th (a letter to a movie producer).
Language: Students analyzed the features of persuasive letters, we’ve spent time preparing for the spellathon test, and students wrote friendly letters to their 4th grade pals.
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We will begin learning about how limestone caves are formed before we get a chance to go visit Mystery Cave at the end of the year.
Reading and Writing: We have been playing around complex sentence structures and similes and metaphors. We’ll work on a larger research project starting next week.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We are spending a couple weeks learning about Iowa geography, history, and people. Students are enjoying the learning about our wonderful state!
Language - We have started our unit on persuasive writing. We will brainstorm ideas early next week. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
