Study Buddies: All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
Junior Achievement: Beginning the week of February 27, each 5th grade Prime Time will be starting the Junior Achievement program. This program consists of 5 classes taught by a community volunteer focused on the improving skills helpful for work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- In math this week, our focus was continuing to practice multiplying fractions, finding areas of rectangles with fractional side lengths, and multiplying mixed numbers. We’ll continue to work on these skills next week.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: students are working on comparison within fiction. In language students began a book trailer using iMovie.
Social Studies: Students have been learning about the tensions leading up to the American Revolution. We will be studying the Declaration of Independence next week.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: We practiced measuring mass & volume this week.
Reading: This week we have been practicing identifying big ideas and writing summaries. Remember, your child should continue to read at least 20 minutes at home daily! I have challenged students to “read without walls”- a book with a main character very different from themselves, a nonfiction book on a topic they don’t know much about, and/or a book in a format they don’t normally read.
Language: Students continue working on their state informational reports.
Next week’s VIP: Caleb
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We’ve been working on our engineering project where we build and test a jet-powered toy car. Our final design competitions will happen in about a week or so!
Reading and Writing: We are building our writing vocabulary through an ongoing vocabulary project using Google slides. We are comparing characters and citing evidence for our ideas.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We’re going to leave our textbook for a while to participate in an online activity called Mission U.S. Through this activity, we’ll learn about Loyalists and Patriots before the Revolution.
Language - We have organized notes into paragraphs for the body of our informational reports. Soon, we’ll be working on the introduction and conclusion. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week next week (Feb. 21): Garrett W.
