This year students have the opportunity to participate in chorus which is held on even days during 8th hour. All students will attend three sessions and then will have the option to join or opt out. Watch for a letter from Mr. Beckman regarding your child signing up for chorus. Contact Mr. Beckman if you have questions.
This year students also have the opportunity to participate in band or orchestra which is held on odd days during 8th hour. All students will have an opportunity to try out different instruments (some already have- some will do this next week). Watch for a letter regarding your child signing up for band or orchestra. Contact Mrs. Larson or Ms. Hahn if you have questions.
Wednesday Morning Music Opportunity
Luther College will be holding a music program every Wednesday morning September 6- December 6 from 8:00-8:50 at Decorah Lutheran Church. Luther music education students will be teaching the class. The class is free and will accept the first 60 students. Please contact Jill Wilson at Luther if you’re interested (email@example.com).
Math- In math this past week, we reviewed some basic math concepts such as greater than or less than and included some math terminology. This week, we also covered 4 lessons. They included:
1-1 explaining patterns in the number of zeros in a product, using base #s and exponents.
1-2 understanding whole number place value, using standard, expanded, expanded with exponents and written forms of numbers.
1-3 working with decimals in tenths, hundredths and thousandths and converting from decimals to fractions and from fractions to decimals.
1-4 understanding decimal place values
We also began logging in to Realize, a computer program, that will allow your son or daughter to supplement and practice some of the math concepts from the week.

Social Studies: Students have been learning routines in social studies, such as Daily Geography, work habits, and organization for success. Fifth grade is a study of American history. As part of that history we are beginning our study of Native Americans and the adaptations they made to the environments they lived in.
Reading and Language: Students have each set up a daily writing notebook. This is a Google Document that I will use to give them feedback on their writing. Each week prompts are added. We have started our first spelling/vocabulary list and tested today. We also set up a fifth-grade books read list and began looking at narrative story structure.
Reading/Language - Social Studies:

Science: This week we have been spending time becoming familiar with science concepts and the scientific process. We’ve already started experimenting! Ask your child- “Just how much is a million???”
Reading: All students have independent reading books that should travel to & from school each day- students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night (in addition to any time read in school). We spent some time this week reviewing: good fit books, read-to-self, and read-to-someone.
Language: This week, students wrote letters to their teachers and we’ve spent some time establishing some routines this week. Each week we will do some word work with a combination of spelling words and vocabulary words. We’ll do activities throughout the week and have an assessment on Fridays.

Science: We are learning about the creek ecosystem. We’ve been down there two times so far with more to come!
Reading and Writing: We are writing some poetry in writing class and reviewing story elements in reading.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - Students have been learning routines in social studies, such as Daily Geography, work habits, and organization for success. We have started learning about maps and U.S. geography to help us understand history.
Language - Students have learned how to participate in our Daily Language Review and Daily Writing. We have started our first spelling/vocabulary unit and tested today. Students also wrote a friendly letter to help me get to know them.
