Clothing Choices with Weather Changes
While DMS will honor current fashion trends, clothing should remain school-appropriate. We kindly request that all students wear clothing that fully covers their midsection during school hours. Please ensure that your child's attire aligns with our school's dress code guidelines (page 11 in student handbook), which prioritize modesty, cleanliness, and safety.
CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- In math this week we wrapped up our unit on ratios. Your student was assessed over their knowledge of ratios today. They’ll be bringing home these assessments to share with you next week. Our next unit of study will focus on percents.
Math 5- This week in math we wrapped up our unit on multiplying and dividing with fractions and mixed numbers. Your student demonstrated their knowledge of these skills on an assessment today. They’ll bring these home to share with you next week. Our next unit of study will focus on learning about volume and finding volume of rectangular prisms.
Language with Mr. Amundson
In writing class, the students have been finishing up their argumentative writing samples. We spent time sharing our writing with our peers and the students enjoyed hearing the various arguments for Frederick Douglass, Nellie Bly, and Elizabeth Friedman. We also started preparing for Step-Up Day with our 4th-grade buddies. Each student was assigned a 4th-grade buddy and we will be writing a few letters back and forth over the next six weeks.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
We are about halfway through our historical fiction unit where students are reading novels in small groups. Daily skills focus on summarizing and participating in discussions. Last week our lesson was on identifying character traits based on how characters respond to challenges.
Reminder: Students are expected to read from their IR book daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
In early February, students were invited to participate in a “Share the eSpark Love” video. Four students chose to participate & I am excited to announce that their video was the 2024 winner of the Share the eSpark Love Contest! Students earned eSpark “swag” for their participation! See a photo of them below!
Science with Mr. Peterson
We continue our study of some of the interactions between the Earth and the Sun system. This week we finished up daily sun patterns and began graphing day length data from northern hemisphere locations. Next week we will graph day length and explore HOW the Earth’s tilt affects day length and sun angle (and, therefore, the amount of solar energy striking the Earth!)
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: Declaration of Independence
Where we are going: The Revolutionary War
Questions/Prompts for your student: Why did the Founders write the Declaration of Independence?
