August 22 Parent/Teacher Meeting/Open House (5-7 PM)
August 24 First day of 2016-2017 School Year
What a great year!
Thank you to all of you, parents, for encouraging and supporting your child through their first year of middle school! It is a big transition year and with us working as a team, your child is now ready for 6th grade!
Tips for parents to avoid the “summer slide”:
-Encourage your child to keep reading over the summer! Set aside a time each day to read! Be sure your child has a book before taking off on a long drive out of town! Check out this article.
-Your child can continue to use his/her IXL accounts for a while; this will be good math practice.
-Involve your child in planning the vacation, planning & preparing summer meals, grocery shopping, gardening, etc.; the life skills that they will learn from these activities will be invaluable in the years to come!
Middle School Parents Still Make a Difference- May Issue
The Parent Institute (Education’s #1 Source for Parent Involvement Information) provides a free resource for parents of middle school aged students. The monthly publication provides articles relevant to issues middle schoolers (and their parents) face. Check it out out here.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: Earth Science! Life Science! Physical Science! Engineering! Oh my! I am confident that there are many future scientists in this class! Students continually amazed me with their higher order thinking skills and their problem solving skills! They’ve learned so much and will do very well in 6th grade science!
Reading: WOW! I am very impressed with how much my students have improved in their reading skills this year! Not only have they improved their comprehension and vocabulary, but they also have made huge progress with other reading skills, such as making connections, inferring, identifying theme, & comparing and contrasting; just to name a few.
Language: The “teach the teacher” speeches were great! I was so proud of how well each student was able to communicate with good speaking skills (and I learned a few things)!
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies -This week we finished our unit about our great state of Iowa. I hope kids continue being interested in learning about history!
Language - Remember kids, good language skills gives a great impression!
