CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- This week in math we started our work with Course 1 (6th grade math curriculum). Your student was introduced to their Mathia account (online) and had some time to explore the program. For the remainder of the school year, they will have a weekly Mathia assignment to complete. Most of this can be completed during the school day (math class, WIN, study hall), but it may also need to be worked on at home from time to time.
Math 5- In math this week we continued our unit on fractions.. We’ve been practicing making common denominators in order to add fractions. We’ll continue this unit next week as well.
Language with Mr. Amundson
In Language class this week we started a mini-unit called Lost in Translation. The students are working on creating a word, pronunciation, definition, and provide an example of when someone could use this word. Students will then illustrate a picture of their newly created word and we will hand their word creation pages up in our classroom. The goal is to be creative and have fun.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
Be sure to ask your 5th grader about their 2024 Resolutions- I was quite impressed with what they came up with! Students are wrapping up the long-term genre project which is due Tuesday, January 9. Friday we started a new unit: Module 3- Extreme Environments!
Reminder: Students are expected to read from their IR book daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
Science with Mr. Peterson
We are starting on our engineering unit where we build jet-powered cars to accomplish certain tasks. We are just finishing Stage 1 this week and will move on to Stage 2 at the end of the week. There are four stages to this unit.
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms you might be able to see outside at this time of the year. This episode features bald eagles, white-tailed deer bucks, and black crappie ice fishing.
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: Wrapped up compare/contrast of Colonial Regions
Where we are going: Slavery and its Impact on Early America
Questions/Prompts for your student: How many ships were involved in the transporting of slaves out of Africa?
