Students have been learning about using the planner to keep track of assignments. At the middle school, we are moving toward independence and do not require parents to sign planners, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look at it to guide your student. We encourage parents to check the planner and encourage good study habits.
Middle School Parents Still Make a Difference- September Issue
The Parent Institute (Education’s #1 Source for Parent Involvement Information) provides a free resource for parents of middle school aged students. The monthly publication provides articles relevant to issues middle schoolers (and their parents) face. Check it out out here.
Study Buddies:
All DMS students are invited to Room 220 (Mrs. Suhr’s room) after school Monday - Thursday until 4:00 to have a quiet place to do work. Staying for Study Buddies is voluntary; students come when they have homework to do and only stay until their work is done! If your child is interested, ask for or have them get a form from their PrimeTime teacher and return the form to school. Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- Our first math assessment is coming up on Monday! We’ve spent the last two days preparing in class by reviewing all of the concepts we’ve learned. Your student has a review packet that includes all of the skills they’ll be assessed on. They have corrected this packet, so it is a great study tool. They will be bringing their tests home to share with you and have you sign in the middle of next week. Tuesday and Wednesday your student will be taking the Math MAP on their computers here at school.
From Mr. Kelley:
Social Studies - Our chapter 1 geography test will be Tuesday. Our next chapter is entitled “American Indians and Their Land”.
Reading and Language: We are working on describing a scene using sensory details. In reading we are setting up routines and learning to craft a narrative summary.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week we continued learning about the scientific process and did a few more experiments. We are beginning our new Unit on Living Sysytems.
Reading: Students are expected to read at least two “IR” (independent reading) books/quarter (most students will read many more than this). Books should come to school each day and go home each night. This was a short week for reading class- but we had a lesson on read-to-someone and took our MAP tests.
Language: This week we began all of our daily/weekly routines including daily writing prompts, daily language review sentences, & word work (with our spelling tests on Friday). Students are working collaboratively on posters to hang in the room showcasing the six pillars of good character.
VIP: Next week’s VIP is Yazmeen
From Mr. Peterson:Science: We have been learning about the physical characteristics of small streams and noticing how sections of the creek provide different bottom structure, current speed, and bank structure. Reading and Writing: We are reviewing story elements and are working up to talking about themes in narratives. We are writing “scenes” - real and imagined - using sensory details as a way to understand how authors create stories. Check out our classroom website: peterson210.edublogs.org
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - The first unit in our book has been about maps and the geography of the United States. We will test on Wed., Sep. 14. A study guide was handed out today. We will talk about what and how to study for a test!
Language - Students have been learning classroom routines for Daily Writing and Daily Language Review (DLR). This week, we added word work and spelling. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week.
