NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- This week in math our focus shifted to division. We started learning different strategies to divide by 2-digit divisors. These strategies included making an estimate and partial quotients. We’ll continue to work with a variety of division strategies over the next few weeks.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: This reading and language unit is a study of informational text and the different purposes and text structures. Students took a quiz on Canvas this week. Be sure to ask them how they did or ask them to show you on Canvas. We have also been doing quite a bit of work in the area of word study. Students were given a list of vocabulary words and prefixes to study. Every two weeks students will be tested on these words. See the following link for expectations.
Social Studies: Students began studying chapter 6 - Early English Settlements. Students will be examining what challenges faced the first English colonies. We will also watch and discuss a reacted interview between the Wampanoag and Pilgrims in connection with discussing the first Thanksgiving.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: This week’s focus was on the patterns of daylight and the moon. We’ll have an assessment shortly after Thanksgiving.
Reading: This week’s lessons have been on identifying the conflict of a story as being external or internal (man vs. self, man vs. man, man vs. nature, or man vs. society).
Language: We started a mini-unit on speaking. Students will give speeches next week; they should be practicing this weekend.
VIP (week of Nov. 28): Danny
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We are learning about patterns of the sun, moon, seasons, and weather. We’ve been learning about sun shadow patterns and what they can tell us about the motion of the Earth, time of day, and seasons.
Reading and Writing: We have been exploring informational text this week, particularly how to recognize main ideas and supporting details in text. We’ve finished up our Old Creamery Theater writing project and will move into a short research project on the foods of Thanksgiving, where they come from and how they are produced. We’ll post our research on the 5th-grade bulletin board when we are done.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We will be testing on unit 5 on Wed., Nov. 23. The students have learned about 8 different New World explorers whose expeditions led to settlements in North America. The next unit will be about early English settlements in North America.
Language - This week we have been working on speeches about what students are thankful for. Speeches will be given Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week: Next week’s star is Hayden K.
