CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- In math this week we started wrapping up our unit on the greatest common factor and the least common multiple. Your student will be assessed for their knowledge of these concepts on Wednesday, January 24.
Math 5- This week in math we continued to practice making common denominators with our fractions in order to add and subtract. We started moving away from using models to help us. Next week we’ll practice subtracting mixed numbers.
Language with Mr. Amundson
In Language class the past few weeks the students finished their Lost in Translation unit. The students enjoyed sharing their writing samples with their peers. We also started our next united focused on sequential writing. The students have been busy watching How It’s Made videos focusing on picking one video of high interest to them. Our plan over the next few weeks is to take notes on our videos and learn more about transition words and headings, along with how to create a sidebar. The students will use these skills as they write their sequential paper on how the topic of their choice is made.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
We have been reading about natural disasters. Students have been practicing summarizing and identifying the main idea within a text.
Reminder: Students are expected to read from their IR book daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
Science with Mr. Peterson
We finished with Stage 2 of our engineering unit. The design goal was this: build a jet-powered car that goes at least 8 meters without hitting a wall. After some initial troubles, the kids have been able to design some really great cars that exceed the design goal by quite a bit! This next week we’ll enter Stage 3, in which we gather data to make a recommendation about what nozzle diameter will work best for different tasks.
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms you might be able to see outside at this time of the year. This episode features great gray owls, pine grosbeaks, and Sax-Zim Bog.
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: Unpacking Slavery and its impact on Early America
Where we are going: Will be reviewing some primary sources and drawing conclusions on which ones we prefer over others
Questions/Prompts for your student: What was slavery’s impact on people like?
