Author Visit
Kelly Yang will join us on Zoom for a question and answer presentation with all 5th and 6th grade students on February 22nd. Thanks to The Oneota Valley Literary Foundation, 5th and 6th grade ELA teachers received donated copies of her first book in the series, Finally Seen, to read aloud to students. The library also received donated copies to circulate for The Reading Games. This order form is for the second book, Finally Heard, which we need to sell multiple copies of to qualify for the Zoom visit with the author. Order forms will come home with students on Feb. 20th or you can click this link and print your own order form.

CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- In math this week we wrapped up our unit on multiplying and dividing with fractions and mixed numbers. Your student was assessed over their knowledge of these skills today. Our next unit of study will focus on ratios.
Math 5- This week in math we started our unit on multiplying and dividing with fractions. Our first few lessons have focused on how fractions and division problems are related. We’ll continue this unit for the next couple of weeks.
Language with Mr. Amundson
Recently in writing class, we started a mini-unit on poetry. Our poems are called I Am From, which requires the students to brainstorm keywords that represent things they like to do or things that are important to them. The students then spend time thinking about memories connected to those keywords, and from there create their beautiful poems. We also spent time discussing key poetry vocabulary, along with a focus on imagery with our word selection within our poems,
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
Last week we started Module 4: Wild West! Students are exploring the character traits people needed to settle in the west. We continue to develop our annotation skills and work on identifying main ideas and supporting details.
Reminder: Students are expected to read from their IR book daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
Science with Mr. Peterson
We finished with our engineering project and held the DMS Olympics last week. Here are the results of the medal ceremonies representing the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal winners in each category. We are finishing up with our final project report to my friend, Evets Nosretep, early this week and then we’ll move on to study gravity. Such a heavy subject, I know. :)
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms you might be able to see outside at this time of the year. This episode features male northern cardinals, white-throated sparrows, and Virginia opossums.
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: Introducing the Tensions (No Taxation w/o Representation!) leading up to the Revolution to the students
Where we are going: Boston Massacre, Tea Party, and TAXES!
Questions/Prompts for your student: Why was the French/Indian War (7 Years–actually nine–War) bad for British Colonists?
