Inspire Day Field Trip
On Friday, Sept. 15, we’ll be attending a field trip to the childhood home of Norman Borlaug. Students will be gone all day for this event to learn about his accomplishments.
Please discuss with your child to see if they would like to sign up for a school lunch or to bring their own. School lunch will be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, carrots, apple juice, and a cookie. We will have the kids sign up for school or home lunch in the upcoming week.
Charging Computers
Student computers need to come to school charged each day. A charging cord has been provided to each student to carry with them. We would greatly appreciate your help at home in reminding students to charge their devices daily.
Additionally, students need a set of earbuds that are kept in the pocket of the computer bag, as they are used often at school. Your help is greatly appreciated with this as well! Thank you!
5th-grade Newsletter Blog
As you probably noticed, we push our newsletter blog link (to this blog!) out to you every week. You can choose to opt out by following the directions in the email. If you're reading this and did not get an email, you can get on the list by emailing Steve Peterson ([email protected]).
You will also find an assignment sheet on the blog, too. If your student misses school, this is a great place to start filling in the gap.
Instrument Information
As many of you know, 5th graders are in the midst of learning about opportunities to participate in band, orchestra, and choir. CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- This week in Hybrid Math we started our first project. It’s all about back to school shopping for school supplies. In this unit students will be practicing their skills with decimals. We’ll be comparing, ordering, adding, and estimating with decimal values.
Math 5- In Math 5 this week we started our first Zearn unit. We learned about and practiced multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. We’ll be continuing this unit into next week as well.
Language with Mr. Amundson
This week in language class we spent most of our time getting to know our weekly routines, organizing our materials for our writing this year, and getting to know each other. It has been a great first week and the students appear to really enjoy school so far.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
It has been an awesome week! We spent the week getting to know each other as well as the expectations and routines for reading class. Students are expected to read from a “good fit book” daily. This good fit book, also called an IR (independent reading) book should travel from home to school each day as there are opportunities to read at school throughout the day as well. Generally speaking, by this grade level, students should not be trying to read one book at home and a different one at school. It would be beneficial to help your child get into the routine of reading approximately 20 minutes each day- a quiet distraction free space is ideal (setting a timer is also helpful for some students). Next week, we will dive into the curriculum with our first module (unit).
Science with Mr. Peterson
It sure was nice to have cooler weather! We did a “mystery box” activity (here’s a link to more about it) and the students sounded exactly like the scientists in the video. It’s a fun activity that gets learners doing the work of science in a short period of time. Later in the week we began our learning unit on ecosystems. You can see the progress we are making through the unit at this link.
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms that you might be able to see outside at this particular time of the year. This episode features red-eyed vireos, common buckeye butterflies, and goldenrod soldier beetles.

Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
This week, Mrs. Suhr was here to teach for Mr. Fromm. We started chapter 1 in our social studies workbook and text. We are learning about geography terms and locations of important physical features in the U. S. Mr. Fromm will return to his classroom starting next week!
