MAP Testing
Map testing starts next week. Please help your child ensure that their computer is fully charged and comes to school with them each day.
9th hours
We started keeping track of missing assignments. We always start the year focusing on helping students feel comfortable with the change in schedule and the new building. Now, though, it is time to help them take more responsibility for the work they do in class and outside of school.
This week, we started keeping track of missing work. Students are allowed three “freebies” during each trimester. The fourth and all other missing assignments will mean students will need to attend an additional 9th hour (actually ½ hour) either after school or before school to make sure they are all caught up with their work.
You can check on your child’s freebies on page 2 of their planner. You will receive an email if your child needs to attend a 9th hour.

CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- This week in math we started our unit on the order of operations (P,E,MD,AS). Your student is working in a small group to plan a BBQ while using these skills to determine the cost of supplies they will need to feed their guests. We’ll be continuing this unit into next week.
Math 5- In math this week we practiced rounding decimals values using a vertical number line. Next week we’ll spend time reviewing the skills we’ve learned and practiced so far this school year. Your student will have their first math assessment over these on Thursday, Sept. 21.
Language with Mr. Amundson
In Language class this week we finished up working on our first writing sample called The Best Part of Me. Students enjoyed sharing their writing samples with their peers during our sharing day. We also continued weekly writing routines, and finished the week up with a beautiful day on a field trip.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
We wrapped up our first story, Inventor’s Secret & took an assessment. We also spent some time learning & practicing how to respond to open ended questions. Next week as we continue with our unit on inventors, we are going to have a guest speaker!
Students are expected to read from their IR daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
Science with Mr. Peterson
Our exploration of the creek ecosystem continues. Depending on weather and other factors, we'll try to make some visits to the creek to gather data about what lives down there. If your student would like to go into the creek to help gather those data, s/he/they will need an extra pair of socks and an old pair of sneakers that can get wet or some high boots. We might need to keep them at school for a week or so. With the field trip last week, I didn't get a chance to talk to the kids about bringing in shoes/boots.
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms that you might be able to see outside at this particular time of the year. This episode features Tennessee warblers, acorn weevils, and leafy brain fungus.
5-P read aloud: Odder, Katherine Applegate
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: After honoring the legacy of 9/11 we continued our work (bit of a slog) towards understanding geography and its relationship to vocabulary surrounding location.
Where we are going: We will continue to explore the political, physical, and climatic nature of the United States and how it impacts our nation's history.
Questions/Prompts for your student: Why is understanding where we are located on the planet a difficult thing to do? What is the story of the Man in the Red Bandana?
