9th hours
We started keeping track of missing assignments. We always start the year focusing on helping students feel comfortable with the change in schedule and the new building. Now, though, it is time to help them take more responsibility for the work they do in class and outside of school.
This week, we started keeping track of missing work. Students are allowed three “freebies” during each trimester. The fourth and all other missing assignments will mean students will need to attend an additional 9th hour (actually ½ hour) either after school or before school to make sure they are all caught up with their work.
You can check on your child’s freebies on page 2 of their planner. You will receive an email if your child needs to attend a 9th hour.
CLASSROOM NEWS
Math with Mrs. Halweg
Hybrid Math- In math this week we continued to practice solving problems using the order of operations. We’ll be wrapping up this unit next week.
Math 5- In math this week your student was assessed over their knowledge of the skills from our first few weeks together. They’ll be bringing home these assessments to share with you and will ask you to sign it early next week. We’ll begin our next unit of study next week which will be about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with decimal values.
Language with Mr. Amundson
In Language class this week we worked on writing our first claim. Students spent time looking at a picture and writing down what they see and what they are curious about. The students refer to it as “I Notice” (evidence) and “I Wonder” (reasoning). In groups we spent time sharing paragraph examples of our claims and reasoning with our peers. We also continued some of our weekly writing routines.
Reading with Mrs. Nowack
This was a busy week- we read a story called Winds of Hope about how spare parts were used to make a windmill that was used to provide electricity and water to impoverished villages in Africa; our skills of the week were on monitoring & clarifying and text structure. We wrapped up the week with a REAL LIFE inventor- Stephan Fridel! More guest speakers next week!
Students are expected to read from their IR daily (it should travel from home to school each day).
Science with Mr. Peterson
We continue our work on energy flow through ecosystems. We’ll have a quick quiz on Wednesday and will be working in class to review key concepts. If you want to help at home, you can look at this slide in our ongoing slide collection for the unit. We’ll head out later this week to gather critters from the creek. We’ll give the creek a few days to recover from weekend’s rain.
What’s happening outside right now? I’ll post some videos that Larry Reis from Winneshiek County Conservation made over the last several years. Each video highlights some organisms that you might be able to see outside at this particular time of the year. This episode features ruby-throated hummingbirds, New England asters, and giant puffballs.
5-P read aloud: Odd and the Frost Giants, Neil Gaimon
Social Studies with Mr. Fromm
What we did: Wrapping up Lesson 1 - America’s Geography & Celebrated Constitution Week (sent home a care package courtesy of Daughters of the American Revolution)
Where we are going: Diving into How America first took shape with the arrival of Native Americans starting with the migration out of Asia.
Questions/Prompts for your student: What should a government do? How does the climate change depending on where you are in the United States?
