Be sure to communicate with your child about where to go or meet you when they are done each day.
NEWS FLASH!!
From Mrs. Halweg:
Math- Your student took their Topic 5 math test this week. On this test they demonstrated their knowledge of dividing whole numbers. They’ll be sharing these with you over the weekend. We began our new topic this week as well. We are now learning how to divide with decimals.
From Mr. Kelley:
Reading and Language: This reading and language unit is a study of informational text and the different purposes and text structures. Currently, students are working on creating an informational article emulating the style and format of wonderopolis.org articles. We also started book clubs. Students created a pacing calendar with their group and will meet once a week to discuss what they are reading. Each group has a Canvas group page with a calendar to organize their notes and discussions.
Social Studies: Students began comparing the three colonial regions (13 colonies) - chapter 7 in the student text.
From Mrs. Nowack:
Science: The space unit tests turned out great! I am so proud of the students!!!! Our next unit is an environmental education unit. This week we learned about the “story of stuff” (ask your child about what this is) and impacts on our environment.
Reading: Through the month of December, we will be reading Freedom Crossing, an historical fiction novel. This week’s lessons were on similes and plot (types of conflict). Students need to complete a book review (over their independent reading book) before the end of the quarter.
Language: This week we have continued to work on writing strong paragraphs.
VIP (week of Dec. 12): Camielle
From Mr. Peterson:
Science: We are finishing up with our learning about the atmosphere. Next week we’ll learn more about how heating and cooling affect the weather.
Reading and Writing: We are working on reading and writing informational text, specifically how authors structure text using five common text structures like description, sequences, cause and effect, etc. We are writing along with our reading. This week we finished up a short written or video “How to…” sequence. Next week we’ll start in on a comparison/contrast piece to explore that text structure.
Special Note: If we get snow this winter (!), I’m letting students know that they can bring in an old rag-towel to put in the bottom of their lockers. That will help absorb water from their snowboots and keep things a bit cleaner.
From Mrs. Suhr:
Social Studies - We tested on Thursday over early English settlements in North America. Next up will be the 13 colonies! This unit will take us nearly to Winter Break.
Language - Students have been working on brainstorming, drafting, and improving paragraphs. Spelling lists are always handed out on Friday for the next week. Spelling tests are always on the last day of the week. We are practicing grammar and writing skills through DLR and Daily Writing.
Star of the Week next week: Danielle Losen
